Day of Caring

Many non profit agencies in Central Arkansas are
confronted with extremely tight budgets. When there
are opportunities to use volunteers, they are
greatly appreciated.
MSgt Steven Saffell from the Little Rock Air Force
Base contacted the Volunteer Center about doing a
Day of Caring for an agency that needed some manual
labor. MSgt Saffell had a crew of able bodied young
men and women that wanted to get involved in their
community. Jo Lynn Short, with the Volunteer
Center made some inquiries and found that their help
was actually needed in their own back yard. The
Girl/Boy Scout Camp on the base was in need of many
improvements. MSgt. Saffell completed the job in
record time. Volunteers that worked the project
were: Steven Saffell, Daniel Oaks, Jordan Gelinas,
William Flemming, Scott Eldridge, Larry Gibson,
Deidre Wren, Nicole Stark, Nicholas Krugh, Juan
Gonzalez, Charles Esposito, Joshua Flemming, Michael
Lounsbury, Mason Harshbarger, Edgar Valverde, Shave
Owens and Ryan Whiteaker.
Ms. Short was contacted later by JinJer James-Green
Director of SCAT (Senior Citizens Activities Today)
regarding a project at the Powell Tower Building.
Several rooms needed to be painted as well as cabinet
doors taken down, sanded and repainted. Ms. Short
contacted MSgt Saffell to see if he might be interested
in another project. He immediately accepted and brought
a crew of nine volunteers. He had to turn away others
for fear that having too many volunteers
might complicate the project. The volunteers that worked
on the SCAT project are shown in the picture. They are:

Steven Saffell (coordinator for the project.) DanOaks,
Cassie Bristow, Kanika Hester, knealing, left to right
are: Jordan Gelinas, Samuel Lee and Matthew Irwin.
JinJer said "They did a wonderful job, working all day
and putting in a lot of hours. They were just a great
group of people to work with and we are so appreciative
of what they did for SCAT. Our tennants are so pleased
with what this group did for them."
Not only do these volunteers from the Little Rock Air
Force Base care about their country, they care about
their community. |
